The Southern Maryland Civil War Round Table is pleased to announce that its next meeting will be held Tuesday, November 10, 2026 at 7:00pm at The Maryland Veterans Museum, 11000 Crain Highway North, Newburg, MD 20664.
Guest Speaker: Brian Brownell

Join us this evening, as Round Table Treasurer Brian Brownell addresses us, not about things financial, but about the Confederate Submatine H.L. Hunley!

By way of a Power Point presnetation, Brian will discuss, in detail, the HL Hunley Confederate submarine. The presentation will cover the people involved in its development, predecessor efforts, and operational use, to include the two accidental sinkings of the Hunley. It will continue with the Hunley’s historic mission, the mysterious loss after the mission, the search for, discovery, and recovery of the Hunley, as well as archeological discoveries inside the vessel.

Brian Brownell and his wife Kelly have been residents of St. Mary’s County since 1994. He is originally a Yankee from Connecticut, and is a 28-year veteran of the US Navy, having finished his career at Naval Air Station Patuxent River in 2008. His enthusiasm for the American Civil War began in the mid-1990s when he happened across the TV program Civil War Journal, hosted by Danny Glover, on the History Channel. It has been a fun and epic journey ever since!
