The Southern Maryland Civil War Round Table is pleased to announce that its next meeting will be held Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at 7:00pm at The Maryland Veterans Museum, 11000 Crain Highway North, Newburg, MD 20664.

Guest Speaker: Chris Mackowski

As we conclude season 12 of the Southern Maryland Civil War Round Table, we welcome back Chris Mackowski. Those who remember his discussion of “Grant’s Last Battle: The Story Behind the Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant” will certainly enjoy tonight’s presentation, “Strike Them a Blow: Battle Along the North Anna River“.

Mr. Mackowski will describe for us the most overlooked segment of the Overland Campaign, which also represented some of the best chances both generals had for destroying each other’s armies—but the war of attrition had taken a personal toll on the commanders, peppering the North Anna River with lost opportunities.

2024 Southern Maryland Civil War Round Table Spring Field Trip

The Past is Waiting for You!

Join the Southern Maryland Civil War Round Table for its Annual Spring Field Trip, departing from the Maryland Veteran’s Museum, 11000 Crain Highway, Newburg, MD on April 27th, 2024. This year’s destination: Richmond, VA, where we will visit the American Civil War Museum, Brown’s Island and The White House of the Confederacy.

The Details:

Date: Saturday, April 27th, 2024

Departure: 8AM from the Maryland Veteran’s Museum, 11000 Crain Highway Newburg, MD . Return time is 5pm.

Pricing: $85 for members/$95 for non-members.

What’s Included: Bus Transportation to and from Richmond, Entry fees to the museums and lunch.

The Southern Maryland Civil War Round Table is pleased to announce that its next meeting will be held Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at 7:00pm at The Maryland Veterans Museum, 11000 Crain Highway North, Newburg, MD 20664.

Guest Speaker: Robert Dunkerly

Year 12 begins Tuesday, 9/12/2023 with a lecture from Robert (Bert) Dunkerly about the circumstances surrounding the explosion at Brown’s Island in Richmond, VA on March 13, 1863.

The 1863 Brown’s Island explosion was the worst industrial accident in the Confederacy, killing 50, mostly teenage girls. Historian Bert Dunkerly will discuss the causes of the accident, and share his research into the identities of the victims and where they are buried. It is an ongoing mystery!

Robert M. (Bert) Dunkerly is a historian, award-winning author, and speaker who is actively involved in historic preservation and research. He holds a degree in History from St. Vincent College and a Masters in Historic Preservation from Middle Tennessee State University. He has worked at fourteen historic sites, written over a dozen books, and numerous scholarly articles. His research includes archaeology, colonial life, military history, and historic commemoration. He is a past President of the Richmond Civil War Round Table, and serves on the Preservation Commission for the American Revolution Round Table-Richmond. He has taught courses at Central Virginia Community College, the University of Richmond, and the Virginia Historical Society. Dunkerly is currently a Park Ranger at Richmond National Battlefield Park. He has visited over 500 battlefields and over 1000 historic sites worldwide. He enjoys exploring local bookstores, battlefields, and breweries, not necessarily in that order.

2020 Southern MD Civil War Round Table Spring Field Trip

DATE: Saturday April 18, 2020

Join us on our annual spring 2020 field trip to Richmond, Virginia. After Virginia seceded from the Union, the capital of the newly formed Confederacy was moved from Montgomery, Alabama to the city of Richmond. Chief among the reason for the move were Richmond’s strategic importance and its hundreds of factories, whose output nearly equaled that of the rest of the Confederacy. Our visit will include a tour of one of those factories; the Tredegar Iron Works, along with tours of the White House of the Confederacy and The American Civil War Museum.

THE TOUR:

The White House of the Confederacy: Serving as the Executive Mansion of the Confederacy from 1861 to 1865, this location was the official quarters during the Civil War of the only President of the Confederate States of America, Jefferson Davis.

The American Civil War Museum: Newly opened,this is becoming the preeminent center for the exploration of the American Civil War and its legacies from multiple perspectives, both union and Confederate, enslaved and freed African Americans, soldiers and civilians.

Tredegar Iron Works: This facility produced iron plating for the first Confederate ironclad warship, the CSS Virginia. It also produced 1,100 artillery pieces during the war, about half of the Confederate’s total domestic production.

THE COST:

The bus trip, lunch and fees is $50 for Round Table members and $60 for non-members during early bird registration by March 10, 2020 (Date of our March meeting). Thereafter, the cost is $55 for members and $65 for non-members.

Arrive at the White House of the Confederacy: 10AM(ish)
Lunch: 12PMm(ish)
Depart Richmond: 3PM
Arrive back in Newburg, MD: 5PM
